Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the option to contest certain calls from the chair umpire, following the practice already in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
