The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but inside Together resides a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes during something horrific). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu now.
