Resurgent Medvedev Secures First Trophy in Nearly 30 Months

19 of the Russian's 21 victories have been earned on hard surfaces

A resurgent Medvedev won his first title for 882 days with a win over Corentin Moutet in the Almaty Open championship match.

The athlete, a former top-ranked player, has had a difficult year, winning just one win at the major tournaments and experiencing a meltdown at the New York tournament.

His inconsistency on the tennis tour - and struggles with his service game in particular - caused him dropping out of the world's top 10 and finally separating with former mentor Gilles Cervara.

Presently training with Thomas Johansson and his other coach, Medvedev has consistently progressed in the last few weeks - peaking in a tightly fought competitive win over Frenchman Moutet.

This represents Medvedev's first championship after the Rome competition and first on a hard court since spring of 2023.

Victory also indicates he has achieved 21 titles at twenty-one different tournaments.

"It's the first time I am participating in a tournament with my both daughters simultaneously, so to win a title is particularly special," said tennis professional Medvedev.

"This championship is in tribute of my second daughter my daughter, because the maiden victory I achieved when my first daughter Alisa was delivered was for her."

The athlete, the former major winner, had been defeated in his past six title deciders, featuring in that event earlier this year.

Medvedev's counter-punching strategy and regular reactions on the playing surface had led observers to wonder if his skill to compete at the elite level was concluded.

Yet the athlete has made changes in the past month, striving to come to the net and perform positively, reinforced by an improved service.

The champion came back from a disadvantage in the initial set against the difficult Moutet, securing four of the last five games to take the lead.

The pair swapped break points in the middle set before the Frenchman, bidding for his initial tour title, took control to create a decider.

He defended 4 early-game chances in a close final set before the Russian secured a break to fifteen to close out the victory.

Appropriately, he clinched victory with a point at the front of the court, with his opponent failing to control a volley after over two and a half hours.
